ALMIRANTE, IN
AN ESTRATEGIC LOCATION

Until June 2019, the Almirante region was part of the Changuinola District, on which it depended for almost everything.

Now, the situation has changed: the Almirante region is the fourth district of the Bocas del Toro province (in addition to Bocas del Toro, Changuinola and Chiriquí Grande).

Most of the local facilities for travelers (hotels, restaurants, transport, supermarkets, shops) are found in the main streets of the city of Almirante.

The rest of the district is occupied by several communities inhabited by representatives of the Ngäbe indians.

THE LIONFISH,
A VERY REAL THREAT

Originally the distant Indic and South Pacific Oceans, are their usual habitat. By accident, in 1992, some ended up in the sea in Florida, in the United States and from there they spread throughout the Caribbean, reaching Panamanian waters more than 15 years ago.

Very prolific and voracious predator, it feeds on the young of marine species. Opportunistic, has become a threat because the other fish do not recognize it as a potential prey.

Lionfish are a threat to regional efforts of fishing production. But, at the same time, it is an opportunity, since it represents a new product to be captured, commercialized and consumed, due to its exquisite taste.
