Exchange tour with fishermen organization of Talamanca
February 21 to 23, 2020

Coordinated visit with the
ASSOCIATION OF ARTISAN FISHERMEN OF THE SOUTH CARIBBEAN OF COSTA RICA.

OBJETIVS

In order to learn about the experiences of other countries that have implemented management, use and/or control plans for lionfish, the visit of seven women from UPESABO to APACS Costa Rica was coordinated, mainly to acquire knowledge related to the management of lionfish, as well as issues relevant to governance and environmental education, in order to strengthen actions in the region.

In addition, share regional and local experiences on the knowledge and control of lionfish, obtaining inputs to design activities and actions, with local experience that allow establishing new and innovative ways of using lionfish, generating initiatives that stimulate the formation of new fishing marketing techniques in the communities.

Finally, issues of inclusion and gender would be addressed to open greater spaces for participation by both young people and women and other historically excluded sectors.

RESULTS

The established objectives were widely achieved, exceeding the expectations of the participants.

Among the topics covered were: fishing licenses, environmental education, coordination to carry out activities in protected areas, receipt of scientific support, organization of fishing tournaments at national and international level, construction of traps, capture instruments, handling, gastronomy and lionfish marketing.

Specific practical training in monitoring and management was one of the most relevant aspects, since the participants learned how to manage and monitor lionfish.

As a result of the activity, the Board of Directors of the group "Empowered Women of Bocatorians Artisanal Fisheries" (MEPAB) was formed, who signed a non-binding agreement with UPESABO.

After the activity, an evaluation process was carried out to provide feedback for future activities.
